This month’s photo challenge was both beautiful and emotional for me. The challenge was: 1. Subject: An elderly or significantly older person, 2. Evoke Sentimental feelings. 3. Choose one of either red, brown or orange colours to be part of the series of photos 4. Incorporate an antique or heirloom item.
I chose to photograph my 93-year-old grandma, who is in the last weeks of her life and my mom, who has taken on the role of her primary caregiver. Last fall, my grandma moved into my parent’s basement, as she was struggling with dementia and had fallen a number of times, while living on her own. It has not always been easy, but I have been so impressed with how my mom has so selflessly cared for her mom, even when Grandma didn’t know who she was. Both of these women have been such examples to me of faith, selfless love, and godly marriages. I am so blessed to have them in my life and it was so special to be able to capture this bond that they share, a bond that surpasses health and mental states.
The heirloom items I chose to include were Grandma’s jewellery: the locket her father gave her when she was 16 (which still hold her parent’s pictures), the rings and bracelet that my grandpa (who died 3 years ago) gave her on their wedding day, more than 60 years ago and her watch, which she still insists on wearing everyday.
